Petaling Jaya Utara (P106)
Tony Pua Vs Chew Mei Fun
Accorrding to the NST, the Petaling Jaya Utara constituency has about 76,000 registered voters, 76.4% of them are Chinese while 15.2% are Malays with the rest being Indians with an even spread in the age breakdown. It is a very middle class constituency which includes the upper middle class Damansara Jaya township.
Chew Mei Fun of MCA has been the member of parliament for Petaling Jaya Utara since 1999. In 2004, Chew Mei Fun who is also the Wanita MCA deputy chairman and Women, Family and Community Development Ministry Parliamentary Secretary, polled 25,603 votes against Ronnie Liu of the DAP who polled 23,122 votes, winning by a slim majority of 2,481 votes. Despite many unresolved issues effecting the Chinese middle class, Chew Mei Fun still has substantial support in this constituency as she is seen as one of the more competent MCA politician.
In December last year, she escaped death after her car skidded and crashed into a divider at the East Coast Highway near Maran. Chew’s official car spun several times before she was thrown out of the vehicle upon impact. She was in a semi-conscious state and fractured her collarbone and injured her left eye. She has since recovered from her injuries. This woman is a tough cookie and has all the luck on her side.
Challenger Tony Phua of DAP is currenly the economic adviser to DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng. Tony Pua, on the other hand, is not an ikan bilis politician.
Tony graduated from Keble College, Oxford University with a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics under a scholarship from the MTC Foundation in 1994. Prior to that, he received Asean and Shaw Foundation scholarships to pursue his "O" and "A"-Levels in Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College.
Before to joining the DAP, he made his millions as CEO and founder of Cyber Village Sdn Bhd, a company listed in the SESDAQ, Singapore.
DAP has a good chance to win this seat this time around, taking advantage of the general anti-govenment middle class sentiment and fielding someone like Tony Pua; an outstanding achiever who represent the hopes and dreams of the middle class Malaysian.
Petaling Jaya Utara will be an interesting seat to watch with boy wonder Tony Pua going against a popular, capable and respected incumbent MCA politician, Chew Mei Fun.
Prediction - Both candidates have an equal chance of winning. But whoever wins, will win with a slim majority.
