Malaysian Men Buying Lingerie Online

The pic is for illustration only

The above picture shows a man trying on a bra he bought online. According to a report in the Star, more Malaysian men are purchasing exotic and sexy ladies undergarments online.

Apparently men prefer to purchase such items online because they are embarrassed to buy such clothing for their wives or girlfriends in normal shops.

The report says that some of the purchasers are even from places like Felda settlements, because they have no easy access to regular shops selling such clothing.

An online lingerie shop owner says another reason people buy online is because of the variety of merchandise - there are many designs to choose from, such as satin slips, corsets, two-piece sets and even those that come with whips. Some of these designs are not readily available in Malaysian shops, especially the more exotic ones.

Lingerie corsets are apparently one of the hottest-selling lingerie and customers are demanding for more corset designs, such as those with lace and leather.

Foreign Workers in Petaling Street

Kuala Lumpur's Petaling Street (Chinatown), a tourist attraction well known for its local Chinese hawker fare and infamous for selling pirated clothes and accessories including bootleg DVDs and CDs, has in recent years seen an influx of foreign workers tending the stalls and shops in place of locals.

A local tabloid reported that the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) together with various other enforcement agencies like the police and immigration department detained 38 foreigners working illegally among the 773 petty traders in Petaling Street, on Monday.

I'm sure there are more than 38 foreigners working illegally in Petaling Street as one can hardly see locals working at the stalls and shops these days. As prior warning was given last month to the petty traders about employing illegal workers, I suppose most foreigners without work permits have temporarily gone into hiding to evade being arrested.

One can't blame the local traders for employing foreigners instead of locals. Apart from the relatively cheap labour, these people work harder and are more enterprising. What's amazing about these foreigners, many of whom are Bangladeshis and Burmese, is that they can speak reasonably fluent Malay and Cantonese. Most have picked up the local languages within a few months in this country. Shame of us Malaysians who still can't speak these languages well despite having lived in this country for so long.

No More Pirated Software

According to a news report by the NST, a reduction in software piracy to 50 per cent in three years could mean thousands of new jobs, millions in tax revenues and economic growth.

The study by International Data Corporation (IDC) said that Malaysia could look forward to about new 2,600 jobs, approximtatly US$660 million (RM2.1 billion) in economic growth and US$144 million more in tax revenues when its software piracy was reduced by half in 2011.

IDC is also of the opnion that reducing software piracy had a "multiplier effect" - for every US$1 spent on licensed software, an additional US$1.25 was spent on related services from local vendors like installing the software and maintenance services.

To reduce software piracy, the Business Software Alliance encouraged governments to update national copyright laws and implement the World Intellectual Property obligation.
------------------

Software and hardware retailers in Low Yat Plaza in KL and Digital Mall in PJ do not sell or install unlicensed sofware any longer. As orginal sofware is much too expensive for the average Malaysian, should the IDC give Malaysia, as a developing nation, a few more years leeway pertaining to software piracy, say until 2020 ? What do you think guys ?

Fuck You - Fcuk You - Fook Yew

In English its Fuck You

In Fashion its Fcuk You.

In Chinese its Fook Yew.

Since I've been forewarned, I wont be stepping into this shop in Kuantan nor will I be buying anything from it.

I won't wanna get fucked. Or rather, Fook-ed !

Well, Fook Yew, too !

This other shop in KL says Fook On (Fuck On, not Fuck Off).

As far as I'm concerned, "Fook On" is better than "Fook Off"

The eBay way

There are only about 4,000 Malaysians who trade on eBay, but those who do get on, find online shopping suits them fine.

Zara Mohd Yusof, a former IT project manager and mother to four grown children, is not your typical retiree.

“My daughter Farah calls me an ‘eBay addict’. I don’t know what she means by that,” she says with a hint of laughter, “but I certainly do love eBay.”

“I first bought a handbag on eBay Singapore for S$15 (RM34). I have bought handbags, shoes, clothes, jewellery, shoes, a sofa bed, divans, a sewing machine, collector items like notes and coins, and even an evening gown for my daughter.

“Sometimes I buy things to give away to my sisters and nephew. With eBay, it costs so little to give so much pleasure. When I see a good bargain that matches what they like and need, I just buy it. I have given away a dining set, a microwave oven and jewellery,” says Zara, who gets online every day.

According to Zara, her best bargain to date is a marble dining table with six marble-top chairs (above), which she bought for only S$200 (RM456).

“While unloading the set, my neighbours asked if it cost S$2,000. That made my day!”

The enterprising lady is now starting to sell on eBay.

“Selling is even more exciting. I have sold a couple of handbags, my son’s Xbox and a couple of Oakley sunglasses.”

Having chalked up almost a hundred trades, Zara is pleasantly surprised to find that the majority of eBay members she has encountered have been honest.

“So far so good. I’ve not encountered any online fraud. The only unpleasant experience was a seller who refused to sell me an item after I won the bid. Probably I got it for too low: S$5 (RM11) for a two-month old microwave oven. But it’s not my fault that he set it so low and no one else bid for it!

Other less than pleasant incidences include a few occasions when things arrived looking worse than the pictures posted. Over the years, Zara has also seen some funny things.

“This guy offered a mirror for sale. And I saw his naked image in the mirror.”

Fortunately none of these incidents have put her off eBay.

“The only really bad thing I can think of is that I may one day end up buying things I don’t need. This is far outweighed by the real bargains I find. Who knows, I may even get rich selling on eBay. Already I have a partner who supplies me with Oakley sunglasses. We split the profits 50-50.”

At the end of the day, Zara thinks eBay is great for people with discipline, who know what they are looking for, and have set a maximum limit for the price they will offer for any item. She thinks shopaholics should stay away.

“Compulsive buyers shouldn’t go anywhere near eBay. I think my daughter Farah would be better off staying away, too!”

All names in this story have been changed at the request of the interviewee.

-------

Aqmal Hadi Shapee (pic) was probably one of the first active Malaysians on eBay.

“I started in late 2002, when Internet access was mainly through a 56k dial-up modem and you could go make a mug of coffee before pictures fully displayed,” the young IT engineer says with a laugh.

“Nowadays, I go online several times a month to buy camera parts. I bought almost RM10,000 worth of equipment last year.”

It all began in 2002 when Aqmal was searching for a rare camera part. Nobody in the regular shops in Kuala Lumpur or even abroad seemed to have it.

“The only lead I got after googling, was a seller on eBay. So I applied for a credit card, went online, and the rest is history.”

Today, Aqmal gets on eBay regularly, buying an average of five items a month. Some of them are for himself but over half are for “friends, and friends of friends”.

“When my friends found out that I buy and sell on eBay, some asked me to buy things for them too. Once I bought a dark room set for RM5,000 and another time, I bought spark plugs that cost RM75 each. Even my company asks me to buy things for them, like software.”

Usually, Aqmal charges a 30% finder’s fee to cover his time and miscellaneous charges. The search for a product and monitoring an auction can take eight to 10 hours.

“I need to monitor each auction as some people have a nasty habit of waiting till the very last minute and submitting a bid that is 50 cents higher than the last highest bid. In such cases, I have to counter-bid immediately!”

Ever helpful Aqmal explains that a lot of people in Malaysia find it a hassle transacting on eBay internationally.

“There are language difficulties, and sometimes prejudice on the side of the sellers. Some just tell you, ‘We don’t ship to Malaysia’, even though there’s no good reason why they shouldn’t.

“As an experienced seller, I can sometimes get around this situation by getting references from people I’ve bought similar products from. And if they still won’t ship to Malaysia, I have a mate in the US who will accept and forward the item to me.”

Another major problem that Malaysian sellers face is the payment system preferred by eBay: PayPal.

Malaysians who get paid through PayPal cannot withdraw their money via a Malaysian bank account. The nearest alternative is to open a Singaporean account and take out the money through there. Luckily for Aqmal, who is constantly buying and selling, there is no need to withdraw the money. He simply keeps any money he receives in his PayPal account for future purchases.

Despite these problems, and an incident where his account was hacked into, Aqmal is absolutely devoted to eBay.

“It’s not just being able to buy things that are hard to find, it’s also the joy of surfing around and seeing funny things like people who put up US$15mil nuclear warships for sale.”

If you would like Aqmal to help you buy something on eBay, drop him a line at morpheuse@yahoo.com. You can also look him up at http://myworld.ebay.com/aqmal.

E-mail scams ala Da Vinci

By EDDIE CHUA

PETALING JAYA: Internet scam artistes have upped the ante to the ultimate level – they are now “phishing” for money in the name of God.

The latest trick appears to be a combination of the good ol’ Nigerian, or the 4-1-9 scam (named after the section in the Nigerian penal code which covers such frauds), and the charity scam. With the recent blaze of publicity concerning the book and movie, The Da Vinci Code which involves secretive sects, the new scam claims to be linked to a Catholic sect.

The e-mail is supposedly from a Rev Father Vincent Mark who claims to represent the Vatican City Priesthood of the Roman Catholic church.

The scam artiste claims that he is looking for a “godly fellow” to assist him in helping the “poor and needy, especially the motherless babies”.

He adds: “It pains me to discover that many people are suffering and dying of hunger and starvation.”

He says he has decided to help these poor folk with US$8mil (RM29.4mil) from the sect (the scam artiste happens to be the financial controller, too) and he needs a “God servant and God-fearing figure” to help him siphon the money out for “humanitarian” purposes. The e-mail is signed off with a Chicago, United States, address.

He also wants the recipient’s full name, address, telephone and fax numbers, occupation and religion to enable him to forward more information on how to obtain the money.

Once you reply, the scamming process will begin and like all Internet frauds, you will end up losing money because there will be a need to pay special “processing fees” or “commissions” before you get the “cash”.

You may think that by now, Internet surfers would be smart enough not to be fooled by such scams, but according to MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Michael Chong, a woman recently called up and told him she lost RM10,000 to a similar in-the-name-of-God Net scam .

Chong said they received calls from several people concerning this latest scam.

“Some called the department to verify the authenticity of the e-mail while others, who had been the victims of the scam, sought help to recover the money purportedly paid to obtain the fund.

“The wife of a businessman lost some RM10,000 last month.

“She told us she had paid the money as part of the administrative payment to retrieve the fund worth several million dollars stashed in an overseas bank. However, after paying the money, she found out that there was no such fund.”

Chong warned the public not to be duped. “Many people fall for it because they are greedy and gullible.”

Meanwhile, a National ICT Security and Emergency Response Centre official said the Nigerian e-mail scam had evolved over the years.

“Every now and then the storyline changes but the bottom line is to entice by offering a lucrative percentage to those who help them transfer the 'funds' from foreign banks.”

The official said many gullible Malaysians had been duped into believing that they would get rich quick.

He said despite repeated warnings, many were still being cheated.

“This is all because of greed. There is no such thing as free money,” he added.
