Avatar Is Overrated - The Perspective Of A Malaysian

Although critically acclaimed science fiction epic film, Avatar, broke many box office records and became the highest- grossing film of all time, I personally think this film is overrated.

Despite the brilliant 3D effect, this film lacks originality. It copied ideas from the Matrix, Pocahontas, Jurassic Park and the Lord of the Rings. This is my Malaysian perspective of the film:

The story takes place in a planet called Pandora. Pandora is somewhat like earth except that it is inhabited by strange giant flora, dinosaur-like animals, ala Jurassic Park and native blue human-like creatures called the Na'vi. The simple and peace loving Na'vi all live in their ancestral kampung which is actually a giant large tree with roots going deep into the round. Pandora is also rich in an expensive mineral called unobtanium - a natural resource highly valued by people on earth.

A corporation, based on earth, run by mat sallehs, intends to colonise Pandora and extract all the unobtanium in it without regard to the natural ecosystem of the planet. Under the pretext of helping the Na'vi natives with education, health care and technology transfer, the corporation sent a huge team of mat sallehs from earth to Pandora. Due to the large potential profits to be made in Pandora, the mat salleh team went equipped with technologically advanced weapons, machinery, vehicles, military personnel, scientists and mining experts. The Na'vi are suspicious of the mat sallehs in their planet but are in no military position to do anything.

The problem starts when the mat salleh team in Pandora discovers very large deposits of unobtanium lying beneath the Na'vi ancestral kampung - the giant tree. To mine this mineral, the mat sallehs have to vacate the Na'vi from their ancestral kampung, by all means necessary - including using force against them.

Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a middle ranking mat salleh in the company, is specially assigned to negotiate with the Na'vi in peacefully vacating their ancestral kampung to make way for mining works to proceed. To gain their trust, Jake must first assimilate himself with the Na'vi. Jake's human body is put into a special machine which technologically transports him into a new Na'vi body- his avatar; ala the Matrix. With this procedure, Jake becomes a mat salleh with a Na'vi body. As a half human, half Na'vi, Jake then commences the diplomatic mission to compromise the Na'vi.

The hospitable Na'vi accepts Jake as a guest and progressively initiates him into their culture, after the Na'vi priestess and Queen predicts that he is "the one", ala the Matrix. Jake then inevitably falls in love with the Na'vi princess, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), ala Pocahontas as she mentors him in the ways of the Na'vi. Before long, Jake starts to enjoy and adapt himself to the Na'vi lifestyle.

Meanwhile, Jake's mat salleh colleagues become impatient with Jake's slow diplomatic methods with the Na'vi and decide to use force against the Na'vi. When the mat sallehs attack the Na'vi ancestral kampung, Jake predictably takes the Na'vi side. Upon first appointing himself the Na'vi leader, he then unites the other Na'vi tribes and animals of Pendora in fighting against his mat salleh colleagues. In the epic battle, despite the overwhelming military odds against the Na'vi, Jake miraculously leads them to victory, ala the Lord of the Rings . Jake then marries Neytiri and becomes king of the Na'vi.

If you haven't seen the film, I've just saved you RM18. If you've already seen the film, I've now given you a new perspective to it. Maybe you should now pay me RM18. ;)

Having said all that, I'd give the film 3 stars out of 5.

7 Movies "Based On A True Story" (That Are Complete Bullshit)

Did you know that when a Hollywood movie says it is based on a true story it does not mean it is 100% based on the real story. Hollywood usually takes creative liberties to add, subtract or modify the facts and circumstances of the real story and make it into a film.

These movies where not 100% based on true stories.

Andy Lau and Carol Chu - The Real Story

Andy Lau Tak-Wah, a Hong Kong Cantopop singer, film actor, and producer is one of Hong Kong's most commercially successful film actors since the 1990s.

Andy Lau has since appeared in more than 100 films and 300 mini-series with Hong Kong's TVB channel, and has a huge fan base throughout Asia with the success of both his on-screen performances and his musical career.

He has been married to his long time Malaysian girlfriend Carol Chu since June 23, 2008, but the marriage and relationship, though rumored, have only been confirmed by Andy Lau in August, last month.

Andy Lau and Carol Chu made a public appearance together for the first time last month, after years of evading rumours of their relationship.

The couple returned to Hong Kong after attending the funeral of Carol Chu’s late father who passed away last month in Malaysia.

Andy Lau and Carol Chu's public appearance together has ended 24 years of public speculation about the couple who have been linked together, but kept their relationship a secret until recently.

According to the rumour mill, Andy Lau has kept his relationship with Carol Chu a secret to protect her from threats by certain underworld figures, fans and harassment from the media.

There are also reports that Andy Lau has received an 'indecent proposal' by a female Malaysian Datuk to spend the night with her after she became infatuated with him.

Here is a short biography of Carol Chu:

It is believed that Carol Chu was born in Penang in 1967. She is the 4th child among 5 daughters in her family. Her father owns a seafood restaurant and moved the family to Kuala Lumpur when she was still young.

There are very little details about Carol Chu's career background but some say she was a part time model who was crowned Miss Modern Malaysia in 1986. Others, however, dispute this saying she was just a runner-up.

There are also many versions of how Carol Chu met Andy Lau, but which one is true, is still a mystery. She has, thus far, kept a very low profile and has not been known to speak to the media. Some sources say Andy Lau met Carol Chu when he was holidaying in Malaysia. Another claimed Carol Chu met Andy Lau in Hong Kong when she was attending a beauty seminar. Whatever the case, we wish the couple the very best in their marriage.

Slumdog Millionaire Wins 8 Oscars

Slumdog Millionaire wins Best Picture in the 81st Academy Awards including 7 other Oscars.

I think the film was good but not 8 Oscars, good.

But Slumdog Millionaire is a story of fate and destiny after all. So maybe it is also its destiny to win 8 Oscars.

Pirated Blu-ray Movies Available ?

The NST has an article on Blu-ray technology. For non techies, this article will be very enlightening.

-----------------------------------

Blu-ray is the latest buzzword in high-definition home entertainment. With the promise of delivering a more immersive home entertainment experience, the new optical media storage format is gaining attention from manufacturers, industry players and consumers.

Tan sees prices of Blu-ray players and discs coming down to a more affordable level in the next two years.

Blu-ray struggles with mass appeal

By Chandra Devi and Siti Syameen Md Khalili

FIRST, there was VCD technology. Then came DVD technology. Now, the world is stuck fast on Blu-ray.

The victor in the much-publicised high-definition optical disc format war with HD DVD, Blu-ray promises more to take home entertainment to the next level. There is now the option of having more content on a single disc, higher-resolution audio and video, drastically improved interactivity and networking features.

Blu-ray is capable of storing more data – 25 gigabytes on a single disc and 50GB on a single dual-layer disc, which is six times the capacity of a dual-layer DVD [commonly called DVD9, which produces clearer pictures then the normal DVD]. This capability alone makes the format exciting, especially for content makers.

For example, today’s film-makers can produce movies and accompanying material such as trailers, comments and voice-overs in HD video. With the interactivity layer inside Blu-ray, special features, menus and graphics also can be added and accessed by users throughout a movie without having to stop the movie. All this means more entertainment byte for movie lovers to consume in a single package.

Others who stand to benefit from Blu-ray’s high-capacity storage are professional photographers, animation designers and those who deal with high volumes of data.

Another engaging experience with Blu-ray is its support for Ethernet connections, which allow content developers to support features such as downloading and updating content through the Web.

Crunch time

Despite all the benefits of Blu-ray, consumers are still slow to embrace this technology. Industry observer Dick Tan says the higher price compared to standard-definition DVD technology could be a factor.

Many people expected Blu-ray disc and player prices to fall after the format war ended, but this did not happen, he explains.

“Blu-ray players are still in the high-end price range, between RM2,999 and RM6,999, while Blu-ray disc movies are priced at about RM140 each. Compare this to a standard DVD player with upscaling features which you can easily purchase for RM400 and an original DVD movie for about RM50.”

Tan sees prices of Blu-ray players and discs coming down to a more affordable level in the next two years.

[Next 2 years ? I think factories in China are already manufacturing cheaper models of Blu-ray players to be available in Jalan Pasar in Kuala Lumpur, Carrefore and Tesco hypermarkets in Malaysia soon]

Besides the price factor, consumers are generally satisfied with the performance of standard-definition DVD players and their ability to upscale to HD, Tan says, so they do not see it necessary to invest in Blu-ray.

But he points out that to achieve the best picture and audio, a Blu-ray player must be paired with a 1,080p HDTV.

“This will be the perfect match, providing pixel to pixel matching. Playing an HD movie on an HDTV, you will see sharper images and more vivid colours and details never possible before. The problem with DVD is that it only supports standard definition.”

Tan believes that the push to create awareness among consumers on the potential of Blu-ray must come from industry players. More efforts must be taken to provide proper demonstrations on quality enabled by this format and to educate consumers, he says.

Tan also believes that HDTV will drive the adoption of Blu-ray in homes and that Blu-ray and DVD will most likely co-exist for another four or five years until HDTVs become more widespread.

Also a concern among consumers about Blu-ray is backward-compatibility with older disc technology. But Tan points out that although earlier generations of Blu-ray players were not able to support older disc formats, now almost all manufacturers of Blu-ray players have made their products backward-compatible to play CDs, VCDs and standard DVDs. Nonetheless, he advises consumers to take note of region coding, as Blu-ray players sold in a certain region may only play discs encoded for that region.

In terms of content on Blu-ray media, Tan says this is no longer an issue because all Hollywood movie studios and others around the world support Blu-ray. There are now hundreds of classic and contemporary movies available on this format.

Asked about Blu-ray becoming a victim of piracy, Tan says it is already happening. “Hackers have cracked the code for Blu-ray twice faster than they took to crack DVD.”

[Original movies on Blu-ray now cost about RM150 a piece (sold online for RM100). But pirated DVD sellers have already repackaged the existing pirated DVD9 as Blu-ray discs - the pirated DVD9 discs normally sold at about RM15 a piece are now repackaged as Blu-ray discs and sold at RM35 a piece. The pirates wanting to clear their stock of DVD9 movies have just changed the outer packages of the DVD9s to pass them off as Blu-rays to be sold to unwitting Malaysians - they know that most Malaysians who are not tech savvy won't be able to tell the difference because the Blu-ray players supports DVD versions as well. It will take some time for the pirates to clear their stock of DVD9s before pirated Blu-ray discs are made available.]

Exciting options

Blu-ray product manufacturers since last year have been introducing such players into the local market. Here are some offerings.

• Sony

As one of the companies that started the Blu-ray Disc Association, Sony has been the busiest in terms of Blu-ray product development. In the local market, you will find two of its players: the first-generation BDP-S1 at RM4,999, and BDP-S300 at RM3,999.

The company has announced that it will include a Blu-ray player into the PlayStation 3 gaming console.

• LG Electronics

LG was the first to develop the dual-format playback player when the HD format war raged on. Now that

Blu-ray has won the war, the company is continuing with its combo option, the BH200-01 Blu-ray/HD DVD player.

This model offers full backward-compatibility and supports Dolby TrueHD/Dolby Digital Plus/DTS-HD with 7.1 channel.

• Pioneer

Pioneer’s latest Blu-ray offering is the BDP-LX70A. At RM6,999, the model is an upgrade to the BDP-LX70 introduced last year. Features on both models are similar, except the newer model supports bitstream output for both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

• Samsung

Last year, Samsung brought into local shores its third-generation option, the RM3,999 BD-P1400. Currently into its fourth-generation of Blu-ray players, the latest model is the BD-P1500, which will be available in September.

This player is able to upconvert standard DVDs to 720p, 1,080i and 1,080p resolutions, offers full HD video playback, and supports Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD High Resolution and Master Audio audio playback plus bitstream audio output through high-definition multimedia interface.

3 Years Jail For Keeping Any Porn

The police recently warned that it is a serious offence for people to possess sex videos.

Segamat OCPD Supt Abd Majid Mohd Ali said “I want people to know it is an offence to have the clips in their mobile phones or copies of it in CD form”.

He said that those found with pornographic videos or clips would face a jail term of up to three years, fine or both under Section 292 of the Penal Code for possession of obscene materials.

Supt Abd Majid Mohd Ali made this statement in conjunction with a case in Segamat involving people in possession of 2 sex video clips in their handphones.

The widely-circulated 6 minute sex video clips show 2 different couples – the first, in a sexual act, and the other showing a woman performing oral sex.

Apparently the sex acts was shot with a mobile phone.

Read the full story in the Star.

Imagine having someone report you for having porn DVDs at home or sex clips in your handphone. I think this law would include prohibiting your having videos or photos of your own penis or vagina as well.

What about porn in your computer ? I guess the same law would apply.

Remember Edison Chen's sex photo scandal in January ? Where celebrities implicated in the scandal included Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan, Mandy Chen, Candice Chan, Rachel Ngan and Cecilia Cheung. See here.

What would you do if the cops arrested your for having porn ?

For the initiated, FB means "Fuck Buddy". This term was coined and introduced to the world in the 14th episode (2nd season) of the HBO television series Sex and the City.

"A fuck buddy is a guy you probably dated once or twice and it didn't really go anywhere, but the sex is so great you sort of... keep him on call."

In Kuala Lumpur, a Fcuk Buddy is just called an FB or Fabu.

Apparently in KL, it is now usual for people become fabus starting from a one night stands. Men or women pick up the opposite sex in clubs and, if they are in the mood, they have sex with each other. They later keep in touch by a phone call or SMS and have sex whenever they have the mood without any relationship commitments.

This is practiced not by screwed-up kids from broken homes or by those who had suffered abuse. These are well-educated young adults from good, stable middle-class families who lack nothing. Finding Meaning In Fight Club

Fight Club is an old film (released in 1999) which is narrated by a lonely, unfulfilled young man (Edward Norton). He hates his job as an insurance executive and finds comfort and escape only in pretending to have a terminal illness so he can attend support groups at night. As he hops from from group to group, he meets another pretender, Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter), who irritates him because she is also a fake.

One day, while returning from a business trip, he meets a fascinating character, Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) on the plane. They become fast friends, and they start Fight Club,
as a kind of protest against the consumer-culture. Fight Club which has its meeting at a bar basements where angry and frustrated men vent their anger and frustrations by having fist fights with each other. Fight Club soon grows in popularity and becomes like a secret society with cross-country branches.

This movie explains to you the meaningless consumer society that we all belong to - which explains our meaningless lives. You'll have to watch this film to understand its message.

This movie teaches you that there is a possibility of living without being employed i.e. having a regular job; although you'd have to live in the fringes of society. It also tells you that there are many people out there just waiting for someone to give them meaning in their lives. People are generally fed up with the superficiality of their existing lives that they are prepared to join a club that promotes destruction - at least it gives some meaning to their pathetic lives.

Tyler Durden says, "...you're not how much money you've got in the bank. You're not your job. You're not your family, and you're not who you tell yourself.... You're not your name.... You're not your problems.... You're not your age.... You are not your hopes."

What Tyler Durden means is that we are consumers. The government, large corporations that make and sell thing and the media decide what we should buy and how we should live. Thats the only way these governments and big corporations can survive. People are just components of these large corporations and governments - people live to work and to buy things big corporations, governments and the media tell them they should have.

Big corporations have brainwashed people to think like this - buying stuff = success. This is a great marketing strategy because these big corporations make huge amounts of money if people think like that, and most people are too stupid to see that they are just mindless consumers, buying things they don't need and living meaningless lives .

The narrater says, "This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time."
What he means is that most people forget that we are all mortal, our ultimate destiny here on earth is to die - everyone has to die one day. If life is short, why are we doing meaningless things (working in a fucked up job), just to buy the things the big corporations tell us that we should buy ? Each time you watch an advertisement, remember this.

Tyler Durden says, "You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else."

Many people think they are special or strive to be special. Why ? because they forget that they came from nowhere (being born) and they are going to die one day just like all the animals and plants. Nobody will remember them - nobody will care; everyone will just get on with their lives. You think people will remember you and what you've done ? think again. How many of you think of your dead relatives ? or remember what someone great like Winston Churchill or Hitler has said or done ? Most people in the world haven't even heard of these people, and they don't fucking care either.

Tyler Durden says, "Sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken."

He means that you cannot change who you are by adding things to yourself. You can wear cool clothes and drive a cool car. But remember, only the clothes and car are cool, not you. You are still the fucking sucker who paid a fortune for the clothes and car to support the company who sold it to you and the owners of that company. For example, if you stay at a 5 star hotel like the Hilton, does that make you cool ? No. You're a sucker because, the money goes to Paris Hilton and her family and other who own the hotel. You are still a 3rd world monkey, working hard so that all the Paris Hiltons of the world don't have to work. Sucker !

If you understood what I've wrote, then, watch this film. Better still, read the book.

If you still haven't got a clue, continue watching Harry Porter, buy that nice car and compete with your friends about how much money you make.

How To Be A Smart Gangster

The film American Gangster is a real story of a cult figure, Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) from the streets of 1970s Harlem.

Nobody noticed Frank Lucas, the quiet driver to one of the inner city's leading black gangster, Bumpy Johnson. But when his boss suddenly dies, Frank exploits the opening in the power structure to build his own empire and create his own version of the American Dream.

Through cunning and strict business ethics, he becomes a leader in the city drug trade by flooding the streets with a better product at a better price. He does this by cutting out the middlemen - dealing directly with opium growers in the Golden Triangle in southeast Asia.

Lucas' gang eventually starts to control the drug trade above the better known Mafia families, and becomes a black power player who has come from nowhere to dominate the scene.

As he amasses a fortune in the process, the authorities - both crooked and straight are out to get him, as are rival drug dealers, once they figure out who he is.

Important lessons we can learn from this film:

Keep A Low Profile

When Frank takes over from his boss Bumpy, nobody knows who Frank was, which is fine for Frank because he’s more interested in making huge amounts of money than in making a name for himself. Foolish pride never factors into Frank’s way of doing business, so he flies under the radar of the authorities for years. When the authorities discovers that a new player has taken over the entire New York heroin trade, they never suspect it is Frank and think it must be the traditional Mafia families. They think there’s no way anyone other than the Mafia who could pull off such a feat. By the time they realise that it is Lucas who’s responsible - a black man from Harlem, of all people - it is too late; Frank has already created an empire.

“The loudest one in the room is the weakest one in the room,” Frank informs his younger brother Huey, who shows up to his party dressed like a pimp. When Frank goes out, he goes to his own club and surrounds himself with his own people. No gold medallions, no bling-blings - Period !. Do not in any case attract unwanted attention.

Sell Better, Cheaper Products

Frank cuts out the middlemen and deals directly with opium growers in southeast Asia.

Brand Your Product

Frank believes in the importance of creating a recognised product or a “brand.” Frank warns rival gangster Nicky Barnes, whom he supplies his drugs to, not to tamper with his product by diluting it. Frank is proud of the quality of his drugs which he refers to as the “Pepsi of smack” or “blue magic.”

Share Your Wealth

For anyone in this line of work, you need the support of the people on the street - your customers and future customers. Each year, Frank is seen handing out turkeys on Thanksgiving. He employs hundreds in his drug refineries and makes sure to always give the impression that, despite peddling drugs on a massive scale, he is actually good for the community.

Watch this film.

Goodfellas

My Ratings: Very Good

Release Date: 1990

Lessons: This movies tells us not to underestimate a man's greed. It also shows that when someone is desperate he will betray his closest friends and even his family. Not everyone can be a successful gangster; you must like being a gangster in addition to having the right personality and intelligence. Just like any other profession, to be successful, you must like what you do in addition to having the right personality and intelligence for the job. Most people only have the intelligence to do the job but do not like, nor have the personality for the job.

Based on Nicholas Pileggi's book WISEGUY, Martin Scorsese's GOODFELLAS is a wry, violent, and exhilarating film about the life of Henry Hill, an aspiring criminal who ends up in the FBI's witness protection program after testifying against his former partners. As a poor Irish-Italian growing up in 1950s New York City, Hill (Ray Liotta) rises through the ranks of his Brooklyn neighborhood's organized crime branch, and with money from the mob he begins living the good life, complete with a beautiful bride, Karen (Lorraine Bracco), a fancy house, and the best seats at the most exclusive restaurants. A botched robbery lands Henry in prison for a brief period of time, and when he gets released, his reckless infidelities and drug abuse damage his association with his adopted family.

Scorsese's film is a visual and sonic onslaught, featuring a brilliant pop-music soundtrack and stunning camera work--including the infamous Steadicam one-take that introduces the audience to the Copacabana's patrons. He uses the songs to infuse a breathtaking, invigorating rhythm into every scene. As the psychopathic Tommy DeVito, Joe Pesci delivers an unforgettable performance that is alarming in its cold-blooded callousness, helping to cement GOODFELLAS' place as a classic portrait of life in the mob.

The Office (The Original British Edition)

My Ratings: Very Good

Release Date: 2001

Lessons: There a lots of lessons you can learn from this series. You learn about the characters of different people you work with. You learn about a kind but incompetent boss. Everyone in the office have got nothing in common with each other except for sharing the same workplace for 8 hours everyday. Absolutely hilarious ! I've watched this series over 20 times and each time I watch it I still laugh.

When the Wernham Hogg paper merchants needed someone to come in and shape up their office, they found the man who definitely thinks he is the most capable candidate in David Brent (Ricky Gervais). Brent rules a tight ship, but at the same time tries to be every employee's best friend. Brent is the centerpiece for this brilliant satire of 9-5 office life. Camera crews follow Brent and his employees around in this British series that uses no laugh track, and doesn't need it. The razor sharp comedy will have audiences in stitches. When released in England, this wickedly funny series broke all sales records for non-film DVD releases.

JFK

My Rating: Very Good

Release Date: 1991

Lessons: Nothing is impossible - people can even kill the president of the United States; the most powerful man in the world. To be the most powerful man in the world means you also have to bear all the responsibilities and hazards that office brings - you must have balls bigger than your head.

Covers the period from 1963 to 1968; Produced and released in 1991.

Oliver Stone's self-proclaimed "countermyth," JFK mocks the doubtful veracity of the Warren Commission's findings on the Kennedy assassination and summarizes some of the myriad theories that have been proposed in its contest. Focusing on the investigation by New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison (Kevin Costner) into the activities of the FBI and other government agencies as well as their attempted cover-ups, Stone weaves fact and speculation into a compelling argument for the reopening of the case files. Garrison begins to investigate local links to the assassination, including Clay Shaw (Tommy Lee Jones), David Ferrie (Joe Pesci), Guy Bannister (Ed Asner), Perry Russo (Kevin Bacon), and Lee Harvey Oswald (Gary Oldman). When the accounts of Ferrie, Russo, and others almost invariably diverge from the FBI versions of events, Garrison begins to suspect a cover-up. Widening his net, he interviews many of the original assassination witnesses and again finds little that coincides with the government's record. Combining interviews with an analysis of the physical evidence, Garrison's team posits the existence of a conspiracy to kill the president. A mysterious Col. X (Donald Sutherland) implies the orchestration of the conspiracy at the highest levels of government, and Garrison is ready to go to trial. Stone deploys video, different film stocks shot at varying speeds, and a dizzying style of montage while harnessing the talents of a large and extraordinary cast to create a film of undeniable power and excitement.

The title character leads viewers through an accidental travelogue of American social history from the early 1960s through the present in this revisionist fable. Vietnam, desegregation, Watergate and more are presented from the perspective of Hanks' lovably slow-witted character as he finds himself embroiled in situations he can't quite comprehend. My Ratings: Very Good

Release Date: 2004

Lessons: This movies teaches you about self determination. It also shows you how this far this girl will go for her family to love her. and always...always watch your back !

Released a little over a year after the grand success of his Oscar-winning feature MYSTIC RIVER, Clint Eastwood returns to the director's chair for MILLION DOLLAR BABY. Eastwood also stars, in the role of Frankie Dunn, a down-on-his-luck former boxing manager who spends the twilight years of his life running a small, dilapidated gym in downtown Los Angeles. Frankie's previous career was blighted by an injury to one of his prize fighters, Scrap (Morgan Freeman), who lost the sight in his right eye during a particularly brutal bout; Scrap now wiles away the hours working as a cleaner in Frankie's gym. Wary of similar occurrences being inflicted on the prestigious young talent that passes before him, Frankie lets a succession of great boxers slip through his fingers. But when the brash, confident young boxer Maggie Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank) strides into the gym, Frankie's life is irretrievably altered. Initially refusing to train Maggie due to her gender and age, Frankie relents when faced with her tenacity, spirit, and burning ambition. The combination of Maggie's talent and Frankie's tutelage paves the way for the adroit fighter to rise steadily through the ranks of women's boxing, with the unlikely coupling forming a genuinely touching bond in the process.

Clint Eastwood has crafted a boxing film fit to stand alongside classics such as RAGING BULL and ROCKY with MILLION DOLLAR BABY. The scenes between Eastwood and Freeman are a delight to watch, with the two old hands pulling off masterfully understated performances as a couple of men teetering on the brink of failure. Likewise, Swank puts in a powerful turn as Maggie, further emphasizing her penchant for unusual roles, and perhaps even bettering her incredible, Oscar-winning showing as Teena Brandon in BOYS DON'T CRY.

The Deer Hunter

My Ratings: Very Good

Release Date: 1978

Lessons: You can learn a lot about friendship and working class America.

An epic three-hour tale of lives forever changed by the Vietnam War, THE DEER HUNTER follows the transformation of a tight group of friends from a working-class town, taking its place alongside such classics as ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT in telling a story of war and disillusionment. On the eve of going to war, Michael (Robert De Niro), Nick (Christopher Walken), and Steven (John Savage) gather for Steven’s wedding. Leaving Steven to his wedding night, Mike, Nick, and pals Axel (Chuck Aspergren), Stan (John Cazale), and John (George Dzundza) depart for the mountains and one last hunting trip. The hunting trip is a funny, poignant scene that firmly establishes the characters as they set off for Vietnam immediately after the trip. The scenes in Vietnam, especially the Russian roulette game, are among the most brutal war scenes on film. The characters' eventual return to the States is emotional and gut-wrenching. Michael Cimino's award-winning film is a powerful look at friendship and love in the midst of war.
