WTF Is A. Sivasubramaniam Who Resigned ?

Who is A. Sivasubramaniam ? Prior to yesterdays news, he was just another Malaysian, to many. Although he has been recently elected the assemblyman for Buntong - not many knew him, and not many cared.

People were only excited at the opposition coalition forming the new government in Perak.

This is A. Sivasubramaniam, the DAP assemblyman for Buntong, who resigned from the DAP, then retracted his resignation yesterday, as reported in the Star.

The reasons he gave for his resignation was that he had lost confidence in the Perak DAP, as he claimed has failed to fulfill its promise to appoint two Indian state executive council members.

By his action, A. Sivasubramaniam appears to imply that:

1. he is special and that the DAP won the Buntong state seat because of his special merits. In other words, no other candidate from the DAP could have stood in Buntong and won.

2. he could have won even if he stood as an independant candidate in Buntong.

3. the Chinese and Malays who voted for him are not important.

4. that the other elected representative in the opposition coalition are incompetent to protect the rights of the Indian community. In other words, only Indians can protect the rights of Indians.

5. without the two Indian state executive council members, Indian rights in Perak are not protected.

Note that the voters in Buntong (whilst predominantly Indians)had previously voted for MCA's Datuk Yik Pooi Hong (a Chinese) for three terms. This is the first time A. Sivasubramaniam is given the opportunity by the voters in Buntong, to represent them as an assemblyman, because they are simply fed-up with the BN.

From this point of view, it appears that the Buntong voters don't really care about the race of the candidates they voted for; they voted for the party. This time, having been fed-up with the BN, Buntong voters would have voted for any candidate selected by the opposition coalition, be it a Chinese, Malay or an Indian - and the lucky candidate selected by the opposition just happened to be A. Sivasubramaniam. This appears to be his secret of success in Buntong.

Why is A. Sivasubramaniam making race an issue when the people who voted for him are not particularly concerned about that ? This is a mystery only A. Sivasubramaniam himself can reveal, with presumably some guided inspiration.

Maybe in future, should A. Sivasubramaniam prove his significance to Malaysians (given the opportunity he now has in Buntong), he will then become known for the right merits and the current perception of him attempting "the katak" - the frog, will thus stand corrected. In politics, perception is everything. And Malaysians "tidak mudah lupa" - never forget easily.

This post is not intended to offend anyone. It is just my two cents.

Please post your comments, guys.

Sufiah Is A Prostitute

This is a sad story of Sufiah Yusof, whose father Farooq is a Pakistani and mother Halimathon, a Malaysian. She was a child maths genius who won a place at Oxford University 10 years ago when she was just 13.

Sufiah (now 23), charges £130 (RM829) an hour as a prostitute operating in Manchester, England, a striking contrast to the many respectable career opportunities which are open to her, with her qualifications.

Sufiah's current choice of career was revealed by an undercover reporter whom she entertained in her flat.

According to the British tabloid, News Of The World, she apparently advertised her services on a hookers' website calling herself Shilpa Lee and describes herself as a "very pretty size 8, 32D bust and 5'5" tall—available for booking every day from 11am to 8pm.

Sufiah gained notority for the first time when she ran away from Oxford at 15. Her problems was apparently caused by her strict father. She wrote an email to sister complaining - "I've finally had enough of 15 years of physical and emotional abuse. You know what I am talking about."

He father is not without controversy. Last week, Farooq, 50, was sentenced to 18 months jail for sexually assaulting two 15 year-old girls he was private tutoring in maths. Prior to this, in 1992, Farooq was jailed three years in relations to a £1.5m mortgage swindle. At 19, Farooq was already a juvenile delinquent - he was sent to borstal (a youth prison in the UK) pertaining to a conspiracy involving £100,000.

Her profile is listed in UK Adult Zone - Manchester Escort Directory.

The Hugging Saint Is In Kuala Lumpur

Amma, known as the hugging saint, is in Kuala Lumpur and will be offering her hugs and blessings for 2 days - on Monday (tomorrow) and on Tuesday at 7pm at the Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre, Mines Resort City, Seri Kembangan, Selangor. Admission is free.

She is called the "hugging saint" because she actually hugs everyone who comes to see her. Amma, born in Kerala, India, in 1953 into a poor fisherman’s family, is considered a healer and spiritual guru in India and in many parts of the world, and is credited with many miracles. Her organisation has been doing plenty of humanitarian work worldwide. In Malaysia, she is represented by the Amriteswari Soceity of Malaysia.

In an interview with T. Selva of the Star, Amma said, “I am what people want to see me as. I don’t worry too much about what they see me as".

Life has not always been easy even for a saint. Just like everyone everyone else attempting the unconventional, Amma had to face a lot of "occupational hazards" when she first stated hugging people. She had to confront the criticisms and even physical attacks of the conservative Indian society for her harmless hugging. Even in today's Malaysia, if you randomly go around town hugging people, I'm sure you'll be swiftly dealt with by society, if not by the police.

According to T Selva's article, the traditional Indian society she came from, including members of her own family, fiercely condemned her unconventional behaviour, particularly when she was a young woman. People even threw stones at her, there were attempts to poison her and she was even stabbed. Despite all these, she survived and has not been distracted from her purpose.

Have any of you met Amma ? Please post your comments.

Pinoccho Award For Liars

We all know the fictional character Pinocchio, the poster boy of liars - his nose grew longer each time he told a lie.

Lying is an art, some people are better liars then others. I realise that some people become proficient liars because they are raised in an environment where lying is a matter of survival. Further, lying is more accepted in their culture than others - there is no shame at being caught lying.

In business, politics and romance, it would be useful to be able to tell if someone is lying to you. Unfortunately humans aren’t very good at detecting lies.

An article in the Star reveals traditional methods used to expose liars:

  • in Sarawak, the Ibans decide on who is telling the truth in a dispute, by having a cockfight. The winner of the cockfight is the one telling the truth. Apparently this is still the practice in the remote villages of Sarawak.
  • in West Africa, for instance, suspected criminals were made to pass a bird’s egg to one another. The person who breaks the egg was considered guilty (the liar), as he was the most nervous.
Short of asking a person to take a polygraph test, here are some tips from the web you can use in identifying a liar:

  • unnecessarily touching on the face, especially the mouth
  • unnecessarily touching the ears
  • talking unusually fast
  • mispronouncing words or mumbling
  • ask your subject for particulars - liars' stories often lack detail, thus if a liar has to provide details, the more likely he is to slip up
  • he averts eye contact
  • there is rise in his vocal pitch
  • ask the suspect to repeat his story, and listen for inconsistencies to ferret out lies
  • watch out for congenital liars, if you've caught a person lying to you many times in the past, he is probably lying to you this time as well

Ok guys, please post more tips on catching liars, if you know any.

Sex Bombs

Security checkpoints metal detectors at airports are meant to detect and prevent persons concealing dangerous weapons from boarding the aircraft.

Although the intention for this procedure is to ensure public safety, it inevitably does occasionally identify innocent passengers wearing nipple (or virgina rings or whatever metal jewelry on their private parts). If this happens, then the usual practice apparently is for that person to show the security officers, in private, that she / he is just wearing metal jewelry which are not dangerous weapons.

However, in a recent news report a woman from Texas was forced to remove a nipple ring with pliers in order to board an airplane. The contention is that nipple rings are not dangerous weapons and thus need not be removed. Before we dismiss this as common sense, wouldn't it be sensible to ask if nipple rings or whatever, could in fact be bombs or bomb triggering device - it is possible for these things to be made these days, isn't it ? after all, just a few years ago we couldn't imagine having a 4GB thumb drive, but today that is normal; everything is getting smaller.

Also, isn't it possible for a woman terrorist to hide a hand grenade in her vagina ? This is very possible, as in Thailand and elsewhere, erotic stage show dancers (Tiger Show dancers) are able to do amazing feats with their vagina, including concealing sharp objects. Can these vagina bombs be detected by the metal detectors ?

A few years ago when I went to a foreign Embassy in KL for a party, a security officer scanned me with a hand held metal detector at the entrance. He politely said that it was normal procedure to check for bombs. As he was scanning near the area of my crotch I said, "Sir, I have a firecracker there ! you don't wanna ignite it".

How does this work in our local airport ? Please post your comments.

Learning To Have Balls

The U.S. Navy SEALs are among the most courageous men on earth. Their secret: mental conditioning. Learn their secrets and you, too, can conquer any fear says an article in Men's Health magazine.

According to the article, the SEALs are fearless because of the training they undergo. Their secret is what psychologist call habituation. This simply means the more you're exposed to something that you initially fear, they less it will fear you and eventually you become immune to it. You get used to it.

This is mind over matter situation. Sergeant Bill Cullen of the First Battalion of the Fourth Marines says, "Essentially, you’re bending the body’s software to control its hardware. It works standing over a putt on the 18th green. It works shooting a final-second free throw. It works banging down a door with a bad guy on the other side."

Graduating as a SEAL is not all about being physically fit, Lieutenant Commander Mike H of executive officer of SEAL Team 10, says, "Today, our primary weapons systems are our people’s heads. You want to excel in all the physical areas, but the physical is just a prerequisite to be a SEAL. Mental weakness is what actually screens you out."

The articles reports that recent experiments at tops institutions in the world including Harvard, Columbia, the University of California at Irvine, have started to solve the mystery of both primal fear and remembered fear. Previously it was thought that once an animal has "learned" to be afraid of something, that memory never vanishes from the animal’s amygdala. But Gregory Quirk, Ph.D., and researcher Kevin Corcoran, of the University of Puerto Rico school of medicine, have discovered that we can overlay our bad memories — and the emotions they evoke — by forming new memories in the brain’s prefrontal cortex that supersede those stored in the amygdala.

You have to repeat an action, any action, over and over, with the knowledge that you are "unlearning" the bad memory. Lieutenant Commander Eric Potterat, Ph.D., a Naval Special Warfare Command psychologist, quotes Hamlet on the subject: "’There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.’

Eric Potterat relates this study to sports and described the difference between winners and losers. "Physically, there’s very little difference between athletes who win Olympic gold and the rest of the field. It’s like the SEAL candidates we see here. Terrific hardware. Situps, pushups, running, swimming — off the charts, superhuman. But over at the Olympic center, the sports psychologists found that the difference between a medal and no medal is determined by an athlete’s mental ability. The elite athletes, the Tiger Woodses, the Kobe Bryants, the Michael Jordans — this is what separates them from the competition. Knowing how to use information."

"Being a warrior, being what you call 'brave,' requires attention to something greater than just martial activity," says Master Chief Will Guild, a 27-year SEAL veteran who runs a mentorship program for incoming candidates. "These men are problem solvers, and there are many ways to solve problems. I think you have to be ready to do whatever it takes, and that includes using diplomacy.

"There's no shortage of physical courage in the SEALs or Marine Corps or any active military branch of the service. Moral courage is something else. And if you want to inspire moral courage in your troops, you have to teach them how to make decisions." he continues.

Human beings can adapt to the very harshest of environments. Viktor Frankl, the famous Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, who is also a Holocaust survivor said, "if someone now asked of us the truth of Dostoevski’s statement that flatly defines man as a being who can get used to anything, we would reply, yes, a man can get used to anything, but do not ask us how"

Psychologists and neuroscientists now agree conquering fear is simply suppressing a fright reaction by repeatedly confronting, the fear-triggering memory or stimulus - facing your fears. For specific phobias, up to 90 percent of people can be cured through such exposure therapy, says David Barlow, director of Boston University's Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders.

So the secret to courage is putting yourself in the same difficult situation or hostile environment on a consistent basis, day in day out, or doing a seemingly difficult action over and over, a million times, until you not longer have any emotional attachment to that situation, environment, or action. You become immune to it. You become part of it.

What do you think guys ? Please post your comments.

Ah Beng Technology

THE BIG PROBLEM

HAZE

THE SMART SOLUTION

AH BENG VEHICLE (or called ABV, in short)

Being an Ah Beng means more than just the clothes and the attitude. It is about being practical as well. This car is prepared for the thick haze that hits KL about twice every year.

Just look at those head lights - 4 additional round ones being installed. How can you not be able to navigate through the thick haze with a car like this ?

Surely this will greatly reduce traffic accidents during the "haze season" - yes its seasonal.

Also, you can be alerted against policemen hiding behind the bushes ahead, waiting to "saman" you (for whatever reason), because you can spot them from afar with these powerful headlights.

The relevant ministry should study the special features of this car and pass legislation to make it compulsory for all cars in Malaysia - All Cars - to have an additional 4 round headlights. Nevermind if it looks ridiculous - IT WILL SAVE LIVES :) and some "saman".

THE INSPIRATION

BATMOBILE

The orginal Batmobile (from the movie Batman Begins 2005)

Malaysia at its innovative best, as usual. Now stop laughing you peasants ! Let me finish my story first...

The government should also support "home made" Malaysian "car manufacturers" by permitting everyone to assemble their own cars at the backyard of their homes. Instead of "Made In Malaysia", it can be "Malaysian Home Made" - Home Made Cars.

With this initiative, Im sure an Ah Beng will soon assemble a flying car (or a car that looks like it can fly) - this can then be included in our aviation or space program. Who cares if the car can really fly or not, right ? It's the perception that matters - as long as the car has wings, Malaysians can be convinced that it can also fly.

Anyway, if the flying car really cannot fly, then this initiative can be put under the purview of the Ministry of Arts and Culture, instead of the Ministry of Science and Technology - because it will be an artistic and cultural effort instead of a scientific and technological one. :)

Note: I've actually already seen a few prototypes of these "flying cars" on the streets (and they had many blinking neon-like lights on them too) - but those had rather small wings attached to them lah. My friend suggested maybe they were not cars, but UFOs, because she saw what looked like aliens driving the vehicles.

What do you think guys ? Malaysia Boleh ? Please post your comments (I know you guys are still laughing...)

Jacky Ho's Father Died Believing In A Miracle

Jacky Ho is a 40 year old sales executive from Seremban. The Malay Mail recent report said that Jacky bought supplements from a direct selling company believing the supplements could cure his 70 year-old father who was diagnosed with a clogged artery.

Despite being told by doctors from University Kebangsaan Malaysia that his father had to undergo an immediate operation to avoid a heart attack, he decided to seek alternative treatment which resulted in his father death.

He sought the advise from a direct selling agent who convinced him that the supplements he was selling could heal his father. Jacky then decided to join the direct selling team and spent RM2,000 to purchase the supplements. He lost his money and lost his dad.

Malaysians are a gullible lot and are easily deceived by "snake oil salesmen" claiming to sell miracles in a bottle. Unscrupulous direct selling companies usually base their fantastic product claims on dubious scientific research findings and anecdotal evidence.

I once told a direct selling agent that if his supplements are so effective, they wouldn't need to sell it through the direct selling method because big pharmaceutical companies would buy the patents to the products and sell it directly to pharmacies and hospitals.

For instance, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Incorporated doesn't have to sell Viagra through direct selling, do they ? They sell directly to hospitals and pharmacies. Simply because their product works.

Beware of con men not only in the direct selling industries but also in the "get-rich-quick" money making / start own business industries. You can normally find these "experts" selling money making courses through "free seminars" advertised in the local newspapers.

I knew a friend who went for a "free seminar" at a hotel where the speaker claimed that he could teach you to make millions with just your ideas. The speaker of dubious character and accreditation gave himself away when he forbid any attendees from asking questions during the free seminar (presumably to prevent anyone from exposing him as a fraud).

He gave the excuse that asking questions during the seminar would interrupt the concentration of the other attendees. Instead, he said, if anyone had any queries they should ask him privately after the seminar. If he had nothing to hide, why must any queries be asked in private ?

Anyway, if he knows how to make millions just by ideas, then he should be doing it himself, right ? Why bother teaching others at a seminar for just a few thousand ringgit ? Bill Gates and Warren Buffet don't make money by giving seminars, do they ?

Read also this interesting article by Australia's ABC .

There's another article in Yahoo about get-rich-quick seminars - read here.

Well, what do you think ? Please post your comments.

"Chickens" Not Welcome In Penang Hotel

This is a very unusual sign. I've seen signs that prohibit entry to under aged children, pets and smokers. But specifically prohibiting chickens ? Never.

"Tidak Ayam" = "No Chicken"

Actually, I don't particularly understand this. This Hotel in Penang actually welcomes locals and foreigners (presumably tourists) but prohibit chickens. What if the ayam is ayam belanda (Turkey) - foreign chicken ?.

Is it because of the bird flu ? It can't be, because bird flu is "selsema burung". So all birds should be prohibited. Including crows - "Gagak". Anyway, why would a chicken or ayam wanna go into a hotel ?

Someone, please alert the animal rights NGOs about this.

The new Penang government should do something about this.

I'm serious, you guys. I know you guys are laughing, seeing the drawing of a chicken with a red X across it.

This girl can't get entry !

What do you think guys ? Is this fair or not ? Please post your comments.

Bomohs Pactising Voodoo

According to an article in Harian Metro, there are black magicians in Malaysia practicing voodoo (the black art popular in Haiti) as there is a demand for their services.

Whilst we live in a modern society, where science dominates our lives, there are still people in this Malaysia (and I believe also in other 3rd world countries) who believe in these kinds of 'hocus pocus".

A 50 year-old black magician, referred to as Mamat, when interviewed, said that Malaysians are prepared to pay up to RM25,000 to cause harm to their adversaries using voodoo.

Mamat says that he gets two customers per month, on average, for these services. Mamat however admits that the fees is nothing compared to the risks involved. Those seeking to harm others using the black arts expose themselves to risks - of the reverse effects of the black magic. This happens when the victim seeks remedial assistance from a more powerful bomoh.

According to Mamat, despite warning his customers of the risks involved and that these practices are against the teachings of the Qur’an, they are still unperturbed. Mamat claims that he uses two methods of black magic - the Panah Rajuna Kuning (anak jin) and the Ilmu Temprom (jembalang bukit), where the victim will apparently turn into a zombie.

Banana tree trunks, clay or plasticine dolls representing the victims, are used in the ritual where special mantras and certain verses of the Qur’an are recited.

Since this post is about voodoo which originates from Haiti, there is an interesting news report that one can buy a 9 year-old sex slave from Haiti for $50 (approximately RM165).

Read more here.

So guys, what do you think ? Does voodoo work ? Do you know of anyone who has been hexed by black magic ? Please post your comments.

Finding Meaning In Fight Club

Fight Club is an old film (released in 1999) which is narrated by a lonely, unfulfilled young man (Edward Norton). He hates his job as an insurance executive and finds comfort and escape only in pretending to have a terminal illness so he can attend support groups at night. As he hops from from group to group, he meets another pretender, Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter), who irritates him because she is also a fake.

One day, while returning from a business trip, he meets a fascinating character, Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) on the plane. They become fast friends, and they start Fight Club,
as a kind of protest against the consumer-culture. Fight Club which has its meeting at a bar basements where angry and frustrated men vent their anger and frustrations by having fist fights with each other. Fight Club soon grows in popularity and becomes like a secret society with cross-country branches.

This movie explains to you the meaningless consumer society that we all belong to - which explains our meaningless lives. You'll have to watch this film to understand its message.

This movie teaches you that there is a possibility of living without being employed i.e. having a regular job; although you'd have to live in the fringes of society. It also tells you that there are many people out there just waiting for someone to give them meaning in their lives. People are generally fed up with the superficiality of their existing lives that they are prepared to join a club that promotes destruction - at least it gives some meaning to their pathetic lives.

Tyler Durden says, "...you're not how much money you've got in the bank. You're not your job. You're not your family, and you're not who you tell yourself.... You're not your name.... You're not your problems.... You're not your age.... You are not your hopes."

What Tyler Durden means is that we are consumers. The government, large corporations that make and sell thing and the media decide what we should buy and how we should live. Thats the only way these governments and big corporations can survive. People are just components of these large corporations and governments - people live to work and to buy things big corporations, governments and the media tell them they should have.

Big corporations have brainwashed people to think like this - buying stuff = success. This is a great marketing strategy because these big corporations make huge amounts of money if people think like that, and most people are too stupid to see that they are just mindless consumers, buying things they don't need and living meaningless lives .

The narrater says, "This is your life, and it's ending one minute at a time."
What he means is that most people forget that we are all mortal, our ultimate destiny here on earth is to die - everyone has to die one day. If life is short, why are we doing meaningless things (working in a fucked up job), just to buy the things the big corporations tell us that we should buy ? Each time you watch an advertisement, remember this.

Tyler Durden says, "You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else."

Many people think they are special or strive to be special. Why ? because they forget that they came from nowhere (being born) and they are going to die one day just like all the animals and plants. Nobody will remember them - nobody will care; everyone will just get on with their lives. You think people will remember you and what you've done ? think again. How many of you think of your dead relatives ? or remember what someone great like Winston Churchill or Hitler has said or done ? Most people in the world haven't even heard of these people, and they don't fucking care either.

Tyler Durden says, "Sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken."

He means that you cannot change who you are by adding things to yourself. You can wear cool clothes and drive a cool car. But remember, only the clothes and car are cool, not you. You are still the fucking sucker who paid a fortune for the clothes and car to support the company who sold it to you and the owners of that company. For example, if you stay at a 5 star hotel like the Hilton, does that make you cool ? No. You're a sucker because, the money goes to Paris Hilton and her family and other who own the hotel. You are still a 3rd world monkey, working hard so that all the Paris Hiltons of the world don't have to work. Sucker !

If you understood what I've wrote, then, watch this film. Better still, read the book.

If you still haven't got a clue, continue watching Harry Porter, buy that nice car and compete with your friends about how much money you make.

Please post your comments.

According to Harian Metro, there is a growing number of Africans in Damansara Damai, Petaling Jaya.

The growing number of Africans in this area has made the local residents anxious as there are many reports in the newspapers about Africans being involved in criminal activities including drug trafficking and "black money" syndicates.

Buy Your Own Keris

There's a place in Gombak, Selangor called Rubinga Heritage gallery which sells quality replicas of famous keris in addition to other Malay weapons. It also sells miniature Keris attached to keychains :)

Rubinga Heritage gallery located at Sungai Pusu, Gombak (near the International Islamic University campus) is a one stop centre which stocks thousands of keris.

For the Malays, the keris is a dagger that embodies their cultural identity and is a believed to have mystical powers.

The most famous keris in Malay legend is the "Taming Sari" (Hang Tuah's keris). The Taming Sari is to Malay culture as King Arthur's sword "Excalibur" is to the British. Apparently, the Taming Sari still exist today and is in the possession of Sultan Azlan Shah, the Sultan of Perak.

The keris is an indigenous weapon in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Southern Thailand and the southern Philippines, and it is believed to be inspired by the daggers of Dong-Son in Vietnam (previously part of the Majapahit empire).

So now you know where to buy quality keris, should you decide to have one.

Badawi's New Cabinet - A New Hope For BN ?

Go here for the full list of the new cabinet - NST

There are a few surprises in Abdullah Badawi's new cabinet:

Not appointed
  • Khairy Jamaluddin (Abdullah Badawi's son in law) was not appointed into the cabinet - whilst, in the past few weeks, he was touted to be a appointed a minister. He wasnt appointed possibly to hush Abdullah Badawi's critics of him practicing nepotism. Khairy has also been keeping a deafening silence since last week despite controversial political issues arising. Everyone is curious to know whats brewing on the 4th floor ? Read more here and here.
  • Mukhriz Mahathir (Mahathir Mohamad's son) was also not given any cabinet posts (are we surprised ?) - he recently wrote a letter to Ahmad Badawi asking him to resign as PM. Lets see what will happen to him once UMNO youth takes the appropriate action against him. Read more here and here.
  • Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Kelantan Prince, MP for Gua Musang, former finance minister and arch rival of former Prime Minster, Mahathir Mohamad) was also not re-appointed to the cabinet (any surprises ?) - his recent controversial letter to all the UMNO division leaders was seen as a challenge to Abdullah Badawi's leadership. Will this veteran UMNO politician make a yet another bid for the UMNO presidency in the coming UMNO elections ?. Read more here and here.
  • Chua Jui Meng (former Health Minister and MCA vice president) - despite many people's speculation that he would be made Senator and be reappointed into the cabinet; this didnt happen. Whilst many view him as considerably more credible than most MCA leaders, he was nevertheless dropped from the list of MCA candidates in the recent general election. It will be interesting to see if he makes a second bid for the MCA presidency in the coming MCA elections. Read more here.
  • S. Subramaniam (former deputy president of MIC) - do not confuse this Subramaniam with the newly appointed minister of Human Resources also by the same name. The former deputy president of MIC was speculated to be made a minister (via a Senatorship) as the other senior MIC leaders have lost their seats in the recent general elections and have declined appointment to the cabinet. Read more here.
  • M. Kayveas (president of PPP and former deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department) - He lost PPP's sole parliamentary seat in the recent general election and now PPP has no parliamentary seat and no representation in the cabinet. Read more here.

Surprising new appointees

  • Zaid Ibrahim (a lawyer and founding partner of Malaysia's largest law firm) was made a Senator and appointed as minister in the Prime Minister's Department - he is seen as a good and moderate UMNO guy, and has the balls to speak his mind. He is not the usual "ampu bodek" and "kuching kurap" kind of BN politician; he doesnt have to, because he already has the money and professional credibility. Read more here and here.
  • Amirsham Aziz (former president and CEO Maybank for 20 years) was also made a Senator and appointed as minister in the Prime Minister's Department heading the Economic Planning Unit - he is seen as serious and respected banker and thus should be good for this department. Read more here.
  • Shahrir Abdul Samad (MP for Johor Bahru, former chairman of the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club, former minister) was appointed minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs - Shahrir Abdul Samad was finally re-appointment to the cabinet after a long absence. This is an UMNO politician who is also seen as clean and has the balls to speak up. He is one of those politicians who has got class. Read more here and here.
  • Muhammad Mohd Taib (controversial former Selangor Menteri Besar) was appointed minister of Rural & Regional Development. Whilst he did not stand as a candidate in the recent general election (as the recent past Selangor Menteri Besar, Khir Toyo did not include him in the list of candidates), he is now politically revived by being appointed a minister via a Senatorship.

Surprising goodbyes

  • Rafidah Aziz - despite all the bad publicity she had in recent years, she did do a good job at MITI for so many years. Goodbye Kak Pidah !.Read more here.
  • Samy Vellu - he has indicated that he doesnt wish to be reappointed into the cabinet (did he read the writings on the wall ?). Lets see if he does make a political comeback; he is known to be a very resilient politician. Read more here.
  • Dr. Koh Tsu Koon (President of Gerakan and former Chief Minister of Penang) - He stood for a parliamentary seat in the recent general election and lost. Whilst he has indicated that he doesnt wish to be appointed to the cabinet, many were speculating that the PM might nevertheless still appoint him to a position in the cabinet by first appointing a him Senator.Remember that despite losing in the election, he is still a very respected Chinese politician in Malaysia. This is thus not the end for him. Read more here.

While all this is going on, Anwar Ibrahim is busy trying to get BN's elected MPs to crossover to the opposition (which only needs 30 more MPs to form a new federal government). Lets see what happens next...

Budget Hookers In JB

A prostitution ring in Pontian, Johor catering for foreign factory workers was raided yesterday.

The police raided a house which doubled up as a brothel and arrested Indonesian hookers in their 20s

with 6 of their clients who were Bangladeshi and Nepalese factory workers.

Two of the hookers were apparently in the midst of "entertaining" their clients, while a few other clients were waiting their turn, when the police raided the budget brothel.

According to the news report, the prostitutes are from Medan, Tanjung Balai and Batam.

I suppose there would be prostitute rings near factories anywhere in the country, wouldn't there ? Its just a matter of finding them. What do you think ? Please post your comments.

Feng Shui And Politics

In an article in the NST 30 December 2007, a feng shui master said that our Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who was born in the Year of the Rabbit, will be having a very good year this year.

All the feng shui masters interviewed were unanimous in predicting that the BN will emerge victorious again in this general election.

On 27 January this year, the NST published another article where feng sui masters said that if the general elections were called in March, the BN will win a landslide victory.

According to one feng shui master interviewed, March in Mandarin is san, which sounds like a mountain, which is a strong earth symbol and also represents longevity.

The feng shui master added that the BN's logo (which is of a scale) contains metal elements and complements the earth element.

"March is the right month with the right element for Barisan Nasional." said the feng shui master. He said any later date for the election will prove unlucky for the BN.

In the same article, another feng shui guru interviewed said BN will be victorious if the elections were held on March 11 and the BN should hold a big celebration on March 13. However, on 15 February 2008 in an article by Associated Press (after the election commission had declared that March 8 would be the polling date), the same feng shui guru was reported saying that March 8 is a good omen and he is confident that the government will garner more than a two-thirds majority in Parliament.

In today's Star, an Indian feng shui master said that one reason for BN's worst defeat this election could be because of the unfavourable astrological planetary positions. He also implied that Dr. Khir Toyo's BN team suffered defeat in Selangor because of the "broom award" to underperforming local councils.

Further, he also implied that, former Port Klang assemblyman, Zakaria Md Deros (who died on Tuesday) suffered the ill fate because he moved into the controversial multi-million-ringgit mansion, which has bad feng shui.

The general elections have come and gone. What do you think ? Is feng shui a "science" (as it is referred to these days) that can accurately predict the future, or is it only good at predicting the past (with the help of hindsight) ? Please post your comments.

Can People Seal Your Identity ?

Be careful when you give your your name, IC and other details online - you might be a the next victim of identity thieves.

Although ID theft is hardly talked about in Malaysia, but there have been many cases reported in the newspapers - stories where old people who discover someone has been withdrawing their EPF savings, families who are told their land has been registered under someone else's name and people who discover someone has been using their name to take loans.

In the past, an indentiy thief would steal from your post box, visit various agencies to get copies of documents and do lots of other labour-intensive work. Today, with computerisation, they can just hack into a computer system and get whatever information they want.

The easiest and most effective way to get someone to provide their personal details (by filling out a form) is to offer a freebie via a website. In return for filling out a form, you are given a magazine, a discount card etc.

Ethical companies will keep customers information to confidential, but unethical companies sell this information to third parties.

PM To Announce Cabinet

According to The Star, Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is expected to announce his new cabinet next week, possibly on Monday.

Badawi is apparently expected to reduce the number of minister posts after BNs shocking performance in the recent general elections.

The Star also reported sources saying that ministerial posts would be trimmed to correspond with the smaller BN representation in parliament - BN has now only 140 MPs compared to 198 MPs previously.

Previously there were 32 ministers, 39 deputy ministers and 20 parliamentary secretaries.

Badawi told Bernama that the new cabinet would still reflect the BN's power-sharing concept and will include all communities.

It will not be easy to reduce the number of ministers and other positions as accommodating the representatives of the 14-member coalition has always been a major factor for the BN.

What do you think ? Who will he select as ministers ? Will Khairy appointed a full minister ?

High Class Prostitute ?

How much will you pay to sleep with her ? Governer Eliot Spitzer paid her $4,300.

According to the New York Times, Eliot Spitzer, 48 years-old, the Governer of New York, has resigned due to his involvement with this 22-year-old high class hooker called "Kristen" in February this year. Kristen, whose real name is Ashley Alexandra Dupre (though she was born Ashley Youmans), is an aspiring musician and was working at The Emperor's Club V.I.P., which offered high-end escort services.

The Emperor's Club V.I.P. was shut down by federal law enforcement officials and the four people operating were arrested. The club had 50 prostitutes. And clients could make appointments in New York, Washington, Miami, London and Paris. The appointments costing from $1,000 to $5,500 an hour could be paid for with cash, credit card, wire transfers or money orders by telephone or the internet. The Web site, ranked the prostitutes on a scale from one to seven “diamonds.” A three-diamond prostitute, for example, could command a fee of $1,000 per hour. A seven-diamond woman cost more than $3,000 an hour. For its most exclusive clients, the Emperor’s Club offered membership in the elite “Icon Club,” with hourly fees starting at $5,500.

Eliot Spitzer, the son of a wealthy real estate investor, was educated at Princeton University and Harvard Law School and worked as a prosecutor in the Manhattan district attorney’s office before being elected New York’s attorney general in 1998.

According to Kristen' s MySpace page, she left a broken family at age 17, having been abused, according and has used drugs and been broke and homeless. She writes she, “Learned what it was like to have everything and lose it, again and again,”. “Learned what it was like to wake up one day and have the people you care about most gone. “But I made it,” she continues. “I’m still here and I love who I am. If I never went through the hard times, I would not be able to appreciate the good ones. Cliché, yes, but I know it’s true.”

The "Mandi Bunga" Ritual

Mandi bunga (Floral Baths) are practiced by the Malays, Chinese and Indians in Malaysia. As with the different cultures, the methods of the mandi bunga also varies.

The mandi bunga is performed to dispel bad luck (bad vibes) - "buang sui" or "buang sial". The rationale is that once a person is void of bad luck, he's able to attract good fortune.

Kaffir Lime (limau purut) and pomelo (the Chinese grapefruit) leaves are commonly used ingredients in the mandi bunga ritual.

The Chinese believe that pomelo leafs dispel bad luck. The Chinese has been practicing mandi bunga for centuries - when one is feeling unwell, or facing hardship and misfortunes or even when one is in need for better luck, he/she should wash his/her hands, face or take a bath with boiled pomelo leaves with water.

Common name: Pomelo.
Scientific name: Citrus grandis.
Malay name: Limau bali, limau besar, limau tambun, limau abong (Malaysia), jeruk bali, jeruk adas, jeruk machan, limau kibau, limau balak,

limau besar, limau betawi, jambua (Indonesia). Other common names: Shaddock, Batavia lemon.

The Malays and Indians believe that bathing with kaffir lime can dispel evil and bad luck. The fruit is cut and blended with plain water and then bathe with as part of spiritual cleansing to "buang sial".

"Limau purut", the Malay name for kaffir lime, or its scientific name citrus hystrix is of the rutaceae family.

Over the years different variants of mandi bunga have emerged transcending cultures. There is a practice of having a bath fusing both kaffir lime and pomelo leaves together.

Another variation is to select one flower for every color of the rainbow. It doesn't matter what type of flower it is, and it need not have a fragrance. Different colour flowers are used because in Tibetan Buddhism it is believed that each color carries a specific energy or vibration. Healing using colors is 'supplementary' to other types of healing.

First, run your bath water. Then, add whatever other ingredients you desire into the bath - it could be pomelo leaves and kaffir lime. Lastly, place the flowers in your bath water with their stems on; or, you can pull off the petals and place only the petals in the water. Don't place the flowers them directly under the water. Instead just sprinkle them around the entire tub.

Leave the flowers in the water for at least 15 minutes prior to your getting into the bath. After soaking the flowers for 15 minutes, completely soak yourself and stay in the water for at least 15 minutes - you can even completely submerge yourself in the water. After the 15 minutes, you can either choose to remain in your flower bath or you can get out.

Once you're out of the flower bath, take a cool shower. It doesn't matter if you use soap or any other products to shower. :)

In some feng shui practices, kafir lime leaves are also used is space clearing - read more here.

Read articles in Malay on Mandi Bunga here and here

There is, however, no scientific evidence as to how effective these baths are in achieving the desired result or if they do really work. What we know is, that these baths have been practiced for generations and could be nothing more than a case of mind over matter - a placebo. Whatever it is, there is no harm trying - at least it is refreshing.

Despite what is said about Asian rituals, such as, it not being congruent with western science - there is no way to explain the Asian concept "heaty" and "cooling" with reference to western science, but the practice has been proven to effectively cure minor ailments like flu, coughs, colds, fevers etc, nevertheless. Similarly, whilst the effectiveness of mandi bunga cannot be proved with reference to western science, it may nevertheless work.

Please share what you think about mandi bunga. Leave you comments. Thanks.

Zakaria Deros Dies - Leaves Istana Behind

It was reported in the Star and Malaysiakini that former Port Klang assemblyman
Datuk Zakaria Md Deros died after suffering a heart attack early Tuesday morning.

The 62 year old controversial politician, Zakaria, drew public attention in 2006 when he built a mansion (dubbed as an istana by his critics) without submitting building plans to the authorities.

The former Klang municipal councillor, Zakaria was also found not to have paid the

assessment for another property for 12 years and his family was caught operating an illegal satay restaurant on government reserve land.

His istana has 21 bathrooms and 16 bedrooms, including 11 that are occupied by each of his children. It also has a VIP room, three living rooms, a dining hall and a prayer room. In addition to all these, Zakaria's istana also has a swimming pool, several gazebos, an orchard, a two-hole golf lawn, an office, a storeroom, two rooms for maids as well as a wet kitchen and a dry kitchen.

Zakaria was dropped from the Umno Selangor line-up for the general election but was replaced by his daughter-in-law Roselinda Abdul Jamil. She however failed to retain the seat.

People got worried when share trading on Bursa Malaysia (the Malaysian Stock Exchange) was suspended for an hour as the market-wide circuit breaker was triggered at 2.58pm yesterday after the bourse fell about 10% to 1,166.32 points at mid-afternoon.

The circuit breaker is automatically triggered if share prices fluctuate wildly. It is similar to those implemented in many other stock exchanges worldwide, including New York and London.

Bursa Malaysia closed the day 123.11 points lower to 1,173.22. Analysts said investors were worried about the future of various projects currently being carried out in States now being controlled by the opposition.

A New Dawn For Malaysia Indeed

This is Malaysia, today. Congratulations.

After The Election - Read What Will Happen Now...

Post Election - Events to look out for:

1. Will there be any newly elected opposition MPs jumping ship and joining Barisan National ?

2. As the performance of the stock market is generally considered an indicator of the publics' and foreign investors' approval of government policy / happenings in the country; watch the direction of the Composite Index this Monday. Last Friday (7th March) the Composite Index was at about 1,289.22 points. Check the edge daily

3. The PM position may be shaky as Badawi has lost BN's traditional 2/3rds majority in parliament and 5 state seats. Who's gonna move in on whom, in Umno ?

4. Who are going to be appointed the ministers in Badawi's new cabinet ?

5. Will Khairy and Mahathir's son, Mukhriz Mahathir be made ministers as they won parliamentary seats ?

6. Gerakan's leader Dr. Koh Tsu Koon has lost his bid for a parliamentary seat. Will he still be made a federal minister - by way of appointing him a senator ? If not, who will take over, former Gerakan chairman, Dr Lim Keng Yaik's ministry ? Will there be a leadership crisis in Gerakan ?

7. Both the MIC's president, Samy Vellu and deputy president, G. Palanivel, have lost their parliamentary seats. Will they both still be made federal ministers - by way of appointing them senators ? If not, who are going to be the Works minister (who is currently being held by Samy Vellu) and the Women, Family and Community Development deputy minister (who is currently being held by G. Palanivel) ?. Will there be a leadership crisis in MIC ? Will Subramaniam (former deputy MIC president) make a move towards improving his political position ?

8. PPP's president Kaveas has lost its only seat - Taiping. Will he still be made a federal deputy minister - by way of appointing him a senator ? Will he be bullied by other BN component parties by denying him / his party a deputy ministership, thus finishing off his political career ?

9. Both the MCA's president, Ong Ka Ting and his brother Ong Ka Chuan have won respectably in their seats. Will they move to consolidate their position within the party ? Will there be a reshuffle in MCA ? Will Ong Ka Chuan be made a minister ? Chua Soi Lek's "proxy" - his son, has won the Labis parliamentary seat. Will he be made a minister or promoted to higher party ranks ? Ling Liong Sik's (the former MCA president) son, Ling Hee Leong (now MCA deputy youth chief) has lost the Gopeng parliamentary seat; will he be offered a minister's post nevertheless -
by way of appointing him a senator ?

10. Will one of the PKR candidates who won a parliamentary seat be prepared to vacate his / her seat and force a by-election so that PKR's de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim (who is able to stand for an election next month) be brought back to parliament ? Will it be his wife Wan Azizah or his daughter Nurul Izzah ? If Anwar Ibrahim goes back to parliament will he be made opposition leader ?

11. How will the opposition's loose coalition fare in the months and years to come ?

12. How will the opposition run Penang, Kedah, Selangor and Perak
in the months and years to come ?

Lets all watch and see...

Please post your comments.

Major Upset In General Elections 2008

The Opposition wins 5 states - Penang, Kelantan, Kedah, Selangor and Perak.

The Opposition denies Barisan Nasional's 2/3 majority in parliament.

BN can still form the federal government with simple majority.

Umno Vs. Anwar Ibrahim

Pematang Pauh (P44)

Permatang Pauh, in Penang, the sole seat and bastion of Keadilan is currently represented by Anwar Ibrahim's wife and current official president of Keadilan, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. This parliamentary seat has 58,449 voters comprising 62.4 per cent Malays, 24.8 per cent Chinese 6.3 per cent Indians and 0.4 per cent others.

Permatang Pauh was formerly the seat held by Anwar Ibrahim prior to him being sentenced in a highly controversial trial to six years in prison for corruption in 1999, thus barring him from contesting in an election and holding public office until April 2008.

In the 1999 General Election, Dr Wan Azizah led Keadilan to win five seats in the Parliament and was herself elected as the MP for Permatang Pauh with a majority of 9,077 votes.
In the 2004 General Election, however, Keadilan only managed to retain one parliamentary seat - Permatang Pauh. Dr Wan Azizah managed to retain this seat defeating , former National Mosque imam, with a very slim majority of 590 votes.

For this election, as Anwar Ibrahim is still barred from contesting in an election and holding public office until April 2008, Dr Wan Azizah will defend this seat against Pirdaus Ismail of Umno, yet again. There is talk that should Dr Wan Azizah win the seat again, she will vacate her seat to give way to Anwar Ibrahim to contest in a by-election, thus opening the way for his political comeback.

The contest of this seat is symbolic as it is seen as a test of strength between Umno and Anwar Ibrahim, and also signifies the survival of Keadilan.

This time round, with potentially the Chinese, Indians and sympathetic Malays voting Keadilan's way, Dr Wan Azizah has a very good chance of retaining this seat with a much larger majority. How large a majority will determine if Dr Wan Azizah will risk vacating the seat for Anwar Ibrahim to contest in a by election.

Prediction - Dr Wan Azizah wins with a larger majority than in 2004 but not large enough for her to risk vacating the seat for Anwar Ibrahim.

Please post your comments. What do you think ?

Sungai Siput - Others Vs. Samy Vellu

Sungai Siput (P62)

Sungai Siput is a town in the Kuala Kangsar district of Perak and stronghold constituency of MIC President and Works Minister, Samy Vellu. The racial make up of Singai Siput consist of 31.40% Malays, 41.40% Chinese, 22.50% Indian and 4.70% others.

MIC strongman Samy Vellu won the seat for 8 terms since 1974.

Challenging Samy Vellu for the 3rd time is Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) central committee member, Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj who is contesting under the Keadilan banner.

In the 1999 elections Samy Vellu defeated Dr Jeyakumar (who then stood under the DAP banner) by a 5,259 votes. In a 3 corneed fight, in 2004, Samy Vellu beat both Dr. Jeyakumar (this time of Keadilan) and Sanmugam Ponmugam Ponnan (of the DAP) by a 10,235-vote majority.

For this election Samy Vellu might have to worry not only of the opposition candidate but also about the Hindraf supporters and possible Subramaniam supporters campaigning against him in this constituency. The Chinese voters will be very much a determining factor here as well.

However, despite the possible swing of more Chinese and Indian votes to the opposition, Samy Vellu is still expected to win albeit with a much reduced majority. Samy Vellu is a survivor and is not easily defeated - he has stood the test of time and overcame much tougher challenges in his political life. If you read about his political career, you can't help but admire his resilience.

What will be interesting is whether he will still be appointed a cabinet minister after the elections and how many of his MIC candidates would have won and by what majority.

The spoiler is Nor Rizan Oon who is standing as an Independent candidate.

Prediction - Samy Vellu lives ! but might be a little wounded.
